Boeing made its debut at the Vietnam International Defense Exhibition 2024, presenting four cutting-edge products focused on defense, security, and rescue operations. The showcased technologies included the CH-47 Chinook heavy-lift helicopter, MH-139 Grey Wolf multi-role helicopter, ScanEagle unmanned aerial system (UAS), and Wave Glider unmanned surface vessel.
Proven Innovations for Defense and Rescue
Boeing representative Dale McDowall highlighted the reliability of the ScanEagle, which boasts over 1.5 million flight hours globally. Capable of continuous flight for 18–19 hours at altitudes of up to 5,800 meters, the ScanEagle is ideal for maritime security, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions. Boeing is actively collaborating with the Vietnam Coast Guard to implement and test these UAV systems, offering training in English, operations, and maintenance in Ba Ria-Vung Tau.
The CH-47 Chinook, recognized for 60 years of operational excellence, is tailored for humanitarian and rescue missions. Its ability to function in challenging terrains with minimal runway requirements makes it a valuable asset for disaster-prone regions like Vietnam. The helicopter can lift up to 5 tons, making it suitable for rescue missions without needing a landing zone, instead performing operations from mountain ledges.Mẫu máy bay không người lái ScanEagle của Boeing với thời gian bay liên tục 18-19 tiếng - Ảnh: Boeing
Driving Defense Modernization in Vietnam
During the exhibition, Boeing engaged with Vietnam’s Ministry of National Defense, Ministry of Public Security, and met Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh. McDowall expressed Boeing’s interest in investing in Vietnam, forging local partnerships, and providing state-of-the-art military equipment to support Vietnam's defense modernization goals.
Michael Nguyen, Director of Boeing Vietnam, emphasized that the showcased products align with Vietnam's defense and security priorities. The CH-47 Chinook, for instance, has been extensively deployed worldwide for rescue and relief missions, demonstrating its versatility and operational efficacy.
Featured Technologies at the Exhibition:
- CH-47 Chinook: Widely used by the U.S. Army and over 20 other organizations, this multi-role helicopter excels in cargo transport, troop movement, search and rescue, and humanitarian missions with its twin-rotor design.
- MH-139 Grey Wolf: Based on the Leonardo Helicopters AW139, this multi-purpose helicopter is designed for patrol, search and rescue, VIP transport, and troop or cargo movement.
- ScanEagle UAS: This tactical UAV, known for its endurance, supports intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions for both military and commercial use.
- Wave Glider: A solar- and wave-powered unmanned surface vessel capable of extended deployments (up to 12 months). It operates individually or in fleets, gathering critical weather, maritime traffic, and underwater data.
A Partnership for a Stronger Future
The exhibition underscores Boeing's commitment to enhancing Vietnam's defense capabilities while fostering bilateral collaborations. Through advanced technologies and tailored training programs, Boeing aims to contribute to Vietnam's security, disaster response, and regional stability.
