2021 Tainan Arts Festival entered its 10th year, and the 1-month event rounded off recently. Based on the concept of ‘City is the Stage’, a total of 36 sessions of 23 programs were planned in various places in Tainan.

The opening ceremony was unveiled by the event - ‘Yi Xiang Chuan Yi, Zhen You Yi Si’ (刈香傳藝.陣有藝思) that was performed by numerous traditional art groups and contemporary performing groups, symbolizing the united effort to drive COVID-19 out.

Wes Davies from Canada hopes to experience different cultures and learn new languages in other countries. It just so happens that he knows a friend living in Taiwan, and this is, therefore, he chose to settle in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

Wes Davies runs the ‘Wes Davies衛斯理’ YouTube channel in English as a travel & culture lover.  The standard of the videos is on par with the quality of the micro-documentary, introducing the life and culture he experienced in Taiwan to the worldwide audience. The videos even motivate Taiwanese to better understand Taiwan and realize that there are still many things worth exploring.

In this episode of ‘New Immigrants in Taiwan’ column, Wes Davies traveled to Tainan for the opening ceremony of the ‘2021 Tainan Arts Festival’ and enjoyed the performance of Yi Ge (藝閣) - various folk tales and traditional folk arts. “The traditional cultures of Taiwan are really superior in the world,” he says. “I hope that foreigners who have never been to Taiwan will get to know the magnificent performance.”

The performance includes ‘Bullfighting Troupe’, ‘Walking on stilts’, ‘Golden Lion Troupe’, and ‘Dragon Troupe’. The implication of the story was introduced before each performance started, and the audience was able to immerse themselves in the mood & atmosphere.

Wes Davies shared that the ‘Dragon Troupe’ is the most splendid and cool dragon dance performance he has ever seen, because of the neon lights and music and which combines tradition and modernity.

Lastly, Wes Davies said that this performance was of a superior standard, and it is even more brilliant than watching a dance show of Broadway theatre.
