The new Alishan railacrs—Formosensis

The new Alishan railcars made their debut after almost three years of preparation and waiting.  The new cars undergo safety tests this march before entering service in the second half of the year.  It was named “Formosensis”.

The “Formosensis ” includes six new carriages that have been constructed with interiors lined with Formosan and Hinoki cypress wood.  The scent of Formosan and Hinoki cypress can be smelled inside when taking the trains.  It might be a special experience for tourists.

Formosan and Hinoki cypress wood are endemic species in Taiwan, which have characteristics of resistance to decay, resistance to rot, and insect resistance, and are high-grade building materials, The Alishan Forest Railway and Cultural Heritage Office said. 

Compared to the other existing cypress carriages, the “Formosensis” has been increased from 9 centimeters to 40 centimeters for each board, and the edges of each board have been specially treated to enhance the three-dimensional effect.  The window frame width has also been increased from 146 centimeters to 168 centimeters to enhance the visual experience for passengers.

The Formosensis is undergoing safety tests.  It is expected to become a tourist attraction when it starts its official service.
