Cabin Fever: Night Market Crowd Control Based on ID-Card Digits

CECC commander Chen Shih-chung (陳時中) stated due to the extension of the national level 3 alert, many vendors have reopened their businesses while under the restrictions of providing takeout services only. This only encouraged people to start going to night markets but as the population increases, rules were implemented as well. The numbers found on ID cards will serve as basis for entry to night markets.

Commander Chen clarified that night market vendors are not prohibited from running their businesses during the national level 3 alert. Local governments adopted several measures to maintain the safety of the public such as utilizing ID card numbers, specifically the last digits, for crowd control in public markets. A distance of 1.5-meters between people must be followed.

The most populated areas in night markets will be marked advising visitors to observe social distancing. Commander Chen emphasized dining in and eating while walking is prohibited during the national level 3 alert. Night market-goers are encouraged to order take-out or food delivery. Vehicles and drivers are also prohibited from entering night markets during peak hours to avoid staying for long periods.
