The Philippines allows mass weddings at open parks; newlyweds wear masks as they make their wedding vows.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, mass weddings are held at open parks for those who wish to get married. In Metro Manila’s city of Makati, mass weddings are held with the city mayor as witness. The newlyweds wear face masks and face shields as they make their wedding vows. There are no red carpets and no priests during the weddings, and no family members, relatives and friends are allowed to attend. Many wedding plans were disrupted by the pandemic, and many couples turn to mass weddings to move on to the next chapter of their lives with their partners.

During the wedding ceremony, Philippine navy soldier, Marvelous and his girlfriend, Jhona, wear face shields and face masks as they make their wedding vows, while the Makati Mayor reads: “I give you this ring, a symbol of my love, commitment and loyalty to you forever. This ring is the proof of our marriage.” The couple helped each other wear their rings and they kissed each other, to formally start their life together.

The capital of the Philippines, Metro Manila, was previously on lock down and many scheduled weddings had to be cancelled. Many newlyweds join mass weddings to complete this important event of their lives. Maybe, soon, they might have a bigger wedding celebration with family, friends and guests to make up for this big event. But at least, according to the law, they are already married.
