According to the Philippine Daily Inquirer, on Saturday, air traffic in the United States was seriously hampered, with inclement weather in several sections of the country compounding the impact of a massive rise in Covid-19 infections fuelled by the Omicron variety.

Around 11:00 p.m. (0400 GMT) Sunday, the United States had 2,723 canceled flights, accounting for more than half of the 4,698 canceled worldwide, according to flight tracking website FlightAware.

Furthermore, 5,993 domestic flights were canceled on Saturday, out of a total of 11.043 worldwide.

Southwest was the worst-affected US airline, with 13 percent of its flights canceled, according to the site.

Airports in Chicago were struck particularly hard by inclement weather in the United States, with a snowstorm forecast in the area on Saturday afternoon and into the night.

The extremely contagious Omicron strain is still wreaking havoc on the global airline industry.

After contracting Covid-19 or coming into contact with someone who has the virus, several pilots, flight attendants, and other employees have been absent from work.

Over the Christmas weekend, airlines around the world canceled 7,500 flights.
