Taiwan, US and Japan Online Seminar: Intellectual Property Rights

Taiwan’s Foreign Relations strikes again! Taiwan, the United States and Japan hold online seminar on “Intellectual Property Rights”

On June 17, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (台灣外交部, MOFA), the Taiwan High Prosecutors Office (台灣高等檢察署, THPO), the American Institute in Taiwan (美國在台協會, AIT), and the Japan–Taiwan Exchange Association (日本台灣交流協會, JTEA) together held an online international seminar “Global Cooperation and Training Framework (全球合作暨訓練架構, GCTF) – New developments on International Property Rights Protection and Digital Infringement Protection. This is to promote the awareness and the implementation of the different governments on protecting intellectual property rights and business trade secrets. Around 120 officials and experts from 19 countries including the United States, South Korea, Thailand, and the Philippines attended the online seminar. Representatives across each country actively participated in the discussions.

Based on the latest Global Competitiveness Report (全球競爭力報告) Of the World Economic Forum (世界經濟論壇), the policies and regulations of Taiwan’s Intellectual property rights protection system is complete, and its global competitiveness ranks 12th among 141 other countries.  In addition, Taiwan and the United States signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen cooperation in the protection of intellectual property rights between both countries in February 2017 to further combat domestic piracy and counterfeit goods.

This is the second time that the Taiwan High Prosecutors Office has participated in GCTF  - activities related to digital infringement issues.  Prosecutor Hsing T’ai Chao (邢泰釗) will publish a summary at the end of the 18th. The MOFA is pleased to see that Taiwan and the law enforcement agencies of other countries have more exchanges and cooperation on the protection of intellectual property rights and combating digital infringement on the basis of GCTF.
