As Chinese New Year is around the corner, it is expected that there will be at least 30,000 new immigrants returning to their hometowns for a family reunion. To prevent the possible invasion of the African swine fever (ASF), the National Immigration Agency (Kaohsiung City Second Service Center) frequently visited factories that employ migrant workers, large migrant dormitories and new immigrants’ organizations.

By providing simple graphics with multilingual text, migrant workers and new immigrants would be able to understand the importance of preventing ASF. Besides, it is hoped that the message can be spread among foreign nationals through word-of-mouth, and everyone can keep the virus away from Taiwan together.

NIA personnel reminded new immigrants not to bring or purchase meat products with unknown places of origin, preventing ASF from affecting livestock farming in Taiwan. In addition, NIA also promoted the “Carefree Covid-19 Vaccination Program” to encourage foreign nationals to get vaccinated as soon as possible. The program adopts four principles, including “won’t be reported”, “won’t be seized”, “won’t be charged for any fee”, and “won’t be banned”.

"Lina (利娜)", a Filipino migrant worker, said that she has several friends who are undocumented migrant workers in Taiwan. After learning this information, she would ask her friends to get vaccinated soon to protect themselves as well as the others.

The Director of Kaohsiung City Second Service Center, Chen Ying Zhi (陳盈智), stated that “getting vaccinated” and “preventing ASF” are of great importance as it involves issues such as a matter of life and death and food hygiene. It is hoped that new immigrants and migrant workers will stand together on the island and ensure the safety and prosperity of Taiwan.
