The COVID-19 Delta variant has invaded the Southern Hemisphere, Australia's biggest city Sydney, the central coast, the Blue Mountains, and Wollongong City. These areas along with other parts of New South Wales entered a lockdown beginning at 6 pm on June 26.

Minister for Health and Medical Research of New South Wales (NSW) Brad Hazzard said that Sydney has added more than 80 confirmed cases, and more than 1 million residents in central and eastern suburbs went under lockdown on June 25.  Later on, the NSW government decided to expand restrictions to the whole of Sydney City from 1 to 2 weeks until July 9.

Premier of NSW Gladys Berejiklian pointed out that during the lockdown, the public must be prepared for the rise of confirmed cases in the next few days. During the lockdown, residents are allowed to leave only for necessary work, medical care, education, and shopping. Gathering in public places in NSW will be restricted and wearing masks indoors will be mandatory.
