The Dutch rely heavily on bicycles as a mode of mobility. The Netherlands will have roughly 22.9 million bicycles in 2020, exceeding the country's 17.2 million people and ranking first in the world with an average of 1.3 bicycles per person, according to data from The Netherlands Institute for Transport Policy Analysis (KiM). Bicycles are therefore an essential component of Dutch culture and daily life.

Anouk van der Steen, a counselor at the Netherlands Office Taipei in Taiwan, has been there since 2019. She is the office's counselor for innovation, technology, and science. During an interview with Swedish YouTuber Lukas, she expressed her passion of cycling.

Anouk van der Steen claimed that she and two pals rode bicycles all throughout Taiwan on their first visit. She was very pleased with the police station's offering of bicycle water refills. Every day she would spend an hour cycling if the weather was good. She loves to ride outside when she rides her bicycle to work, however she occasionally takes the MRT.
