10X10 Fun Taipei: Double Tenth Day Float Carnival opened 10 days celebration at the Liberty Square from October 10th, National Immigration Agency provided four DIY events in the theme of multicultural art during the exhibition on 12th, 13th, 19th and 20th.
The first DIY event is a handmade patchwork booth. The stall owner is Wu Shi-shen (吳氏深), a new resident of Vietnam. She opened the “Jie Yen Patchwork Workshop” which is named after her two children with rare illness. By the reason that she needed to take care of her children so that she is unable to go out for work. Nevertheless, she was not defeated by fate and chose not to rely on social donation, but by learning patchwork and design. She makes patchwork at home to make living.
The art of patchwork combined with Vietnamese culture, and with the exquisite craftsmanship the patchwork bags are popular among customers. Through these patchworks, Wu shows the spirit of perseverance of Vietnamese female. She is further recognized by the award of new resident entrepreneurship project.
The traditional Vietnamese costume key rings made by Wu are featured with texture and details of Vietnamese costumes in patchwork, as well as hand-made patchwork backpacks and purses. There are traditional totems and cute cartoons figures. People can make their own patchwork by themselves. There are more DIY events such as painted Indonesian Yogyakarta mask and handmade traditional Vietnamese lantern on 19th and 20th respectively. The woodcarving and colorful masks are decorations for traditional mask dances and shadow play. The Vietnamese lanterns are the traditional skills of the Vietnamese Mid-Autumn Festival, which the candlelight in the star lanterns symbolizes hope. Citizens are welcomed to experience how to make multicultural handicrafts with family on weekends.
