The long-established "Osaka Festival of Lights" is one of Osaka's most iconic winter festivals, combining urban landscapes with light and sound art. From November 2023 to January 2024, the festival spans 24 districts in Osaka, creating a dazzling feast of light and shadow. This year’s main attractions are Midosuji Illumination and OSAKA Hikari Renaissance at Nakanoshima, transforming the entire city into a stage for light art.
World-Record "Midosuji Illumination"
The Midosuji Illumination stretches approximately 4 kilometers from Umeda to Namba, with colorful lights adorning ginkgo trees along the avenue. This year’s theme, “The Light of Growth,” represents the shared growth of the city and its residents. Residents were invited to participate in the creation process, and the area is decorated with light projections, providing a warm and radiant ambiance.
"OSAKA Hikari Renaissance"
Nakanoshima features light projection mapping and 3D effects on historical buildings, presenting styles inspired by Western paintings and stained glass. Combined with the riverside scenery, the event includes light installations and markets, adding an artistic flair to Osaka, the “City of Water.”
Night Museum and Tower of the Sun
The "teamLab Botanical Garden Osaka" at Osaka Botanical Garden transforms its 24-hectare space into an interactive world of light art. Using laser lights and digital technology, the garden showcases a stunning nightscape that changes with the seasons. Meanwhile, the “Tower of the Sun” at the Expo Memorial Park relaunches its nighttime illumination after six years. Tainan 400 Special Light Zone Debuts
This year, Tainan City was invited to participate for the sixth time, showcasing the "Tainan 400" theme at Zone 10 in Nakanoshima, becoming a focal point of the event. The main installation, "Ximen-kun," is designed as a personified version of Tainan's Small West Gate (Jingbo Gate). Cultural and Agricultural Product Promotion
In line with the "Tainan 400" theme, Tainan’s Tourism Bureau has set up a tourism information booth at the event. It features popular souvenirs, such as Blessings from Mazu, Zeelandia Fortress Fries, and creative pomelo ginseng products, as well as agricultural specialties like dried fruits, pomelo blossom coffee, and sesame cakes. Gifts, including divination stick keychains, dried mangoes, and hand warmers, are also provided to attract visitors and promote Tainan tourism and local products.
