New Taipei City Mayor Encourages New Residents to Share Life through Writing

     2019 New Taipei City and new resident literary awards was held on Nov 16th. Mayor Hou You Yi, who was the award presenter, stated that New Taipei City has the largest number of new resident population in Taiwan, now reached to one hundred thousand people. In the future, new policies regarding to new residents are included in the six main targets for the 2030 city plan. The new resident is encouraged to share more of their life experiences and stories throughout writing to create more intercultural communication.

     Hou said, the winners stand out from all the participants, for example Wu Yen Chiu from Vietnam, she learned Chinese really well in four years. Also, the first prize winner, Lin Yue Shen, has started writing from 65 years old. It is really impressive to receive an award in such a short year of writing career.

     Department of Cultural Affair indicated that in order to boost writing practices, City Hall holds the New Taipei Literary Awards every year which includes short novel, reportage, illustration literature, prose and stage play. Also, New Residents Literary Awards encourage new residents to share their life through writing. The official has received 108 pieces participated this year.

    The total prize money for the literary awards of New Taipei City and New Residents is 1.63million Taiwanese dollar. Huang Yu Qi won both the prose and poetry awards, Wu Yen Chiu won the new residents literary awards writing in both Taiwanese and Vietnamese.

     Department of Cultural Affair indicated that they will publishes those awarded works in real books and e-books to create more exposure of the New Taipei City literature.
