According to the Ministry of Culture, at the 2022 Sundance Feature Festival, Taiwanese director Joe Hsieh's (謝文明) animated film "Night Bus (夜車)" won the Short Film Jury Award. It's the first time a Taiwanese film has won a Sundance award for outstanding independent filmmaking.
"Night Bus" is a 20-minute thriller cartoon that tells the story of a series of exciting events that occurred on a late-night commuter bus after an elderly lady's necklace was stolen. Over one-third of the conversation in "Night Bus" is in Hoklo, which is used to convey the qualities of Taiwan. Chen Shu-fang (陳淑芳), a Golden Horse Award recipient, is the voice actor of the elderly lady in the animation.

In announcing the award, Sundance Festival judge Kevin Jerome Everson commented, "With its fine handling of film noir characteristics, well-rounded storytelling, tension, and fully constructed characters, this film takes us on a ride figuratively and literally."
In addition, in 2020, "Night Bus" won a Golden Horse Award, Taiwan's equivalent of the Academy Awards, and in February 2021, it received a Special Jury Mention at the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival in France. In June 2021, the film received the Grand Prix for short films at Animafest Zagreb in Croatia.

From January 20 to 30, the Sundance Film Festival, one of the world's largest independent film festivals, will be shown live online and on satellite screens across the United States. Each January, the festival brings together artists and audiences for the world premieres of new work.
