A magnitude 4.4 earthquake rocked Kaohsiung, Taiwan at 1:12 this morning (Oct. 1), followed by a magnitude 4.2 quake an hour and a half later at 2:42 a.m., according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

The epicenter of the first earthquake was 43.2 kilometers (km) northeast of Kaohsiung City Hall at a shallow depth of 14.2 km. Located along the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, Taiwan uses an intensity scale of 1 to 7, which gauges the degree to which a quake is felt in a specific location.

The quake’s intensity registered a 4 in Kaohsiung City and Pingtung County, a 2 in Tainan City, Chiayi County, and Yunlin County, and a 1 in Taitung County, Chiayi City, and Changhua County.

The epicenter of the second temblor was 43.2 km northeast of Kaohsiung City Hall at a depth of 12.6 km, according to CWB data.

The second quake’s intensity registered a 3 in Pingtung County, a 2 in Kaohsiung City and Tainan City, and a 1 in Chiayi County, Chiayi City, Taitung County, Yunlin County, and Hualien County. No injuries were reported from either quake at the time of publication.
