Staying Active in Winter: Tips for Cold-Weather Exercise

As temperatures drop, staying active remains essential. CNN wellness expert Dr. Leana Wen shares insights on maintaining exercise routines during colder months and staying safe outdoors.

Weekly Exercise Goals:
Adults should aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity weekly, according to the CDC. Winter options include jogging, skiing, or vigorous activities like shoveling snow. Research shows even 75 minutes weekly offers significant health benefits, reducing risks of mortality, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.

Indoor vs. Outdoor Exercise:
The best exercise is one you can do consistently. Indoor options like gym workouts or home equipment suit those avoiding the cold, while outdoor activities are fine with proper precautions. It is also important to stay hydrated while exercising in cold weather

Cold-Weather Exercise Tips:

  • Know Yourself: Consult a doctor if you’re new to cold-weather exercise. Start slowly and stay near shelter.
  • Check the Weather: Be mindful of wind chill and aim for warmer times of the day. Avoid rain and snow if unprepared.
  • Dress Appropriately: Wear layers and technical fabrics to manage sweat and protect sensitive areas from frostbite.
  • Hydrate: Cold can dull thirst, so drink water before and during extended exercise.
  • Inform Others: Let someone know your plans in case of hypothermia, which may cause confusion.

If conditions are extreme or comfort is a concern, opt for indoor workouts. Always prioritize safety, listen to your body, and adjust activities to your fitness level and weather tolerance.
