‘English Day’ set by Taichung City Government to build a better bilingual learning environment

To assist schools in creating an English learning environment, the Taichung City Government has set the Wednesday in the third week of each month an ‘English Day’ in Taichung City. It is hoped that students in Taichung City can easily learn English from an early age through various interesting & immersive learning.

Yang Chen-Sheng (楊振昇), the Director of the Education Bureau, Taichung City Government, states that the ‘English Day’ aims to create an all-English learning environment in Taichung. Since September this year, schools in Taichung City have actively participated in this project, holding various creative learning activities through the life-oriented curriculum. The students would have much exposure to the English environment and learn the language more easily.

Many elementary schools in Taichung also plan learning activities lasting for the entire semester. For example, the Duxing Elementary School followed the ‘English Day’ and invited foreign teachers to teach their children in English and also introduce important festivals in Taiwan and abroad.

Dong Hai Elementary School, which has been developing international education for a long time, also introduced the National Days of various countries around the world on the National Day of the Republic of China. Teachers shared the history and culture of other countries by introducing the colors and shapes of national flags. This not only offers an interesting way of learning English but also helps students to develop a global vision.

The Education Bureau, Taichung City Government stated that in order to promote the ‘English Day’ in schools in Taichung City, about 100 foreign English teachers were recruited to collaborate with local teachers to teach students, assist in the planning of various English camps for free. Together they would actively promote international exchanges through interactive learning.
