According to the TAIWAN TODAY, former Vice President Chen Chien-jen represented Taiwan at a virtual COVID-19 response meeting convened Nov. 2 by Jerzy Duszynski, president of the Polish Academy of Sciences, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During his remarks, Chen said the experiences and lessons learned from the 2003 severe acute respiratory syndrome outbreak underpin the success of the Taiwan Model. As the coronavirus continues to spread, countries around the world still need to learn from one another, adopt necessary prevention measures and fast-track the development of antivirals in order to successfully contain the pandemic, he added.

Other high-profile attendees at the event included Chang Shan-chwen, executive vice president of National Taiwan University, and James Liao, president of Academia Sinica.

Chen also took the opportunity to thank the government and people of Poland for donating 400,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses to Taiwan in September, which is evidence of the virtuous circle with the fellow force for good.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said “Ex-Vice President Chen & @SinicaFans President Liao shared the country's experiences in combating #COVID19 with @PAN_akademia President Duszynski during a special videoconference involving experts from #Taiwan & #Poland. Global cooperation is key to realizing #HealthForAll!”

Taiwan and Poland enjoy a close relationship that covers a broad spectrum of fields, the MOFA said, noting robust mutual investment and economic cooperation. The countries have worked together successfully in other areas as well, including a deal on improving cooperation in science and higher education inked in 2018, the ministry added. (DL-E)
