The Legislative Yuan recently approved an amendment to the "Road Traffic Management and Penalty Act" in its third reading, which will take effect on June 30 and protect the safety of pedestrians. The new rules state that a violation occurs when there are people using a crosswalk, a car's front wheels, a motorcycle's front wheel, or a slow-moving automobile enters the crosswalk line, and the space between the vehicle and the pedestrians is less than 3 meters. A fine of NT$6,000 will be levied. Additionally, under the new system, the maximum fine for driving without a license is now NT$24,000, and the maximum fine for reckless driving is now NT$36,000.

In addition to raising the penalty for compact automobiles that fail to yield to pedestrians to NT$6,000, 3 points must be recorded and 3 hours of road safety lessons are mandatory. The penalties for compact automobiles and full-size cars will be increased to NT$7,200, while visually impaired people with white canes or guide dogs who do not stop are given precedence to pass. The fine for minor injuries is NT$

7,200, the fine for serious injuries is NT$18,000, and the fine for death is NT$36,000 if an accident results from failing to stop and give way to pedestrians and results in death or injury.

When it comes to the fine for driving without a license, the maximum amount will be doubled to NT$24,000 if you operate a motorbike or compact automobile. In addition, there will be extra fines of NT$12,000 for motorbikes and compact automobiles and NT$40,000 for full-size car for individuals who continue to drive while their license is suspended for drunk driving or has been revoked.

The definition of serious speeding for reckless driving has been changed from 60 km/h over the legal limit to 40 km/h above the legal limit. Regardless of the kind of vehicle, drivers who violate the speed limit by more than 80 kilometers will be fined NT$36,000.
