Religious groups and the New Immigrants Family Center invite new residents from different countries to taste "exotic cuisines"!

To let the new immigrants learn about the cuisines of different countries, the Kaohsiung Catholic group (高雄天主教團體) and the New Immigrants Family Service Center (新住民家庭服務中心) launched the "Good Shepherd Canteen—Food on the Table" (善牧食堂—餐桌上的飲食) event, inviting new immigrants’ sisters to serve as lecturers to share about their hometown cuisine and culture. Four classes were launched, inviting new immigrants from the Philippines, Ukraine, Malaysia, Okinawa, and other countries to share their culture and cuisine with everybody.

Hsiao Yu-Mei (蕭玉梅), a new immigrant from the Philippines, said that she lived in the Philippines with her parents from mainland China since she was a child. She met her husband who studied in the Philippines, and they got married and settled in Taiwan. Hsiao Yu-Mei, who lived in the Philippines for many years, shared the "Macaroni Salad" that is often served at local parties and celebrations. The fruits produced in the Philippines are sour, so locals like to buy canned fruits for salads, and since it is hot in the Philippines, cold salad is very popular.

In addition, Oona (歐娜), a new immigrant from Ukraine (烏克蘭), also shared that the children in Taiwan are very hard-working and very studious, which aroused the curiosity of other immigrant mother students, and they wanted to know the difference between the education method in Ukraine from that in Taiwan. Oona explained that children in Ukraine go to class for only half a day, and the rest of the day is their own play time, but Taiwanese children not only spend a long time in class, but also have many extra-curricular and supplementary lessons to take after class, which is indeed very tough for the children. Whether it’s gourmet cuisine or family education, every country is different, and new immigrants find it very interesting.
