In June 2023, the Titan submersible tragically imploded, killing all five onboard, including OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush. Marine scientist Steven Ross testified that a malfunction occurred six days prior, during Dive 87, causing the crew to slam into the rear of the vessel. The dive was aborted due to an issue with the variable ballast tank, which affected the submersible’s buoyancy.Newly released video shows Titan submersible on the sea floor

Ross also recounted incidents from the 2022 Titanic dives, including a loud bang thought to be from a shifting pressure hull and thruster malfunctions. He expressed concerns over safety protocols, noting that the Titan had not been inspected by the U.S. Coast Guard in recent years.

David Lochridge, a former OceanGate director, testified about safety issues during an earlier dive to the Andrea Doria wreck in 2016, where Rush allegedly panicked after colliding with the wreckage. Lochridge criticized OceanGate’s safety culture, stating that his warnings about Titan’s construction were ignored.

Rojas, an OceanGate mission specialist, gave a tearful testimony, expressing confidence in the company’s transparency and recalling the passengers’ excitement before the fatal dive.
